About Team Tony Poynder

Following his education at the T.S. Mercury on the River Hamble, Tony Poynder joined the Merchant Navy from a young age.

He served as a Deck Apprenticeship with Silver Line, a London based company of which their ships consisted of bulk carriers, iron ore carriers and chemical and gas carriers.

On obtaining his First Mate’s foreign going certificate, Tony joined the Liverpool based company Bibby Line, again serving on many different classes of vessels, including OBO’s, container ships, and general cargo and LPG carriers. On achieving his Master’s foreign going certificate, in 1978, Tony returned to Bibby Line, before joining Townsend Thoresen which later became P&O Ferries.

Tony remained with P&O Ferries on the Dover to Zeebrugge and Dover to Calais services until leaving the sea in 1985 due to health problems.

Since his time at sea Tony has become an approved MCA tutor and examiner. Tony is qualified to deliver and examine courses such as PST, Life Boat and Fast Rescue Boat Courses, EDH and Crisis Management and Human Behaviour.

Tony brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the Viking team and has helped make the Maritime Skills Academy an excellent training facility.
